If you have a website then you have probably heard about how important it is to use search engine optimization to get more traffic to your website. But what is search engine optimization and why is it so important when it comes to website traffic?

Search engine optimization is a process of using certain keywords or key phrases over and over throughout a web page so that the spiders that are sent out by the major search engines find your page and index it with other pages that mention those particular keywords or key phrases.

The more times that those keywords or key phrases are mentioned the higher that your site will be ranked by the spiders. That means that when someone does a search through a search engine for those keywords or key phrases where your site shows up on the search engine results page is decided by the keyword density on your website.

That is a simple overview of the process. It's actually more complex than that but that is gist of the process. So in order to get your page listed higher on the search engine results page and in order to get more traffic it's important to have as much search engine optimized content on your site as possible.

At this point you're probably thinking that you can just put up a page on your website that has a particular keyword or key phrase on it repeated 20 times with no other content and that will count as search engine optimized content but that's not quite how it works. The spiders are programmed to count the words on a page and figure out the keyword density.

If the keyword density is too high they will not index that site and your site will not show up at all in the search engine results. It the keyword density is too low then your page will show up at the very bottom of the search engine results. Figuring out the right keyword density is an important part of search engine optimization.

Having original content is very important also. If the spiders indexing your web page recognize the text on your website as being exactly the same as or similar to the text on another web page then your site will not be indexed and will not show up in the search engine results. So what you really need to do in order to effectively search engine optimize your website is have 100% original content that has the correct keyword density.
